2012 University of the Cumberlands Baseball Wrap- Up
The University of the Cumberlands baseball team had their season end earlier than expected in the 2012 Mid-South Conference (MSC) Tournament losing to Georgetown in the first round and UVA-Wise in the elimination game. The Patriots were picked to finish 4th in the MSC heading into the season with high expectations. Cumberlands carried the 7th seed into tournament play and ended the year with a 26-28 overall record (8-13 MSC).
The Patriots played .500 ball throughout the season until the last week of the season when they were able to win 5 of 7 games to head into tournament play on a hot streak. On the season, UC had a .301 batting average, 106 doubles, 22 triples, and 11 homeruns. The Patriots also posted a .411 slugging percentage and had a total of 98 stolen bases.
Cumberlands had one player named 1st Team All Mid-South Conference and 9 student athletes were named to the All Mid-South Academic Team. Senior Evan Bennett (Winchester, KY) was named 1st Team All MSC posting a .374 batting average with 61 hits (15 doubles, 1 triple, 2 homeruns). He also had 28 runs batted in and 15 stolen bases. The Patriots named to the All MSC Academic Team for their work in the classroom include: Evan Bennett, Donovan Feenstra (Calgary, Canada), Quinton Warriner (Russell Springs, KY), John Doolittle (Sharpsburg, GA), Billy Grant (Lebanon, KY), Ethan Parsons (Louisa, KY), Ben Meadows (Carrolton, KY), Blake Castator (Hamilton, OH), and Charles Hyde (Fort Mitchell, KY).
The Patriots coaching staff is already out on the recruiting trail this offseason looking to find new talent to bring in to an emerging national power. The Patriots return 2 starters from last year's team and have a strong incoming class that will have an immediate impact during the 2013 season.
Patriots baseball continues its winning ways with a total record of 1,296-726, with Head Coach Brad Shelton earning 388 victories after 11 seasons.
