University of the Cumberlands
2010 Season Preview

The 2010 University of the Cumberlands Men and Women's Cross Country teams are looking forward to another successful season in 2010. The men's team took home the runner-up spot in the Mid-South Conference Championship with the women's team winning the Mid-South Conference Championship. Two men qualified for the NAIA National Championship in Vancouver, Washington as Josh Laughlin (Bellbrook, OH) finished 105th and Aundreas Lopez (Radcliff, KY) finished in 270th place. The women's team sent their entire team to the NAIA National Championship as they finished in 29th place. The team consisted of Darcy Mascotti (Bellbrook, OH), Elyse Velte (Waynesville, OH), Lauren Kachel (Pickerington, OH), Lauren Louive (Massillon, OH), Shannon Schaffer (Fairfield, OH), Brianna Cecil (Williamsburg, OH), and Jennifer Marcum (Springboro, OH).

As we look ahead to the 2010 campaign, the Patriots are looking at a young, but experienced team overall to come together and show passion and dedication to bring home the Mid-South Conference Championship. Staring at the top, the Patriots will have reigning back to back Mid-South Conference Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year, Floyd Stroud coming back for his
19th season.

On the men's side, the Patriots will have to replace their #1 runner in Josh Laughlin as well as a consistent threat in William Slider (Louisville, KY). A number of returners come back for the Patriots including Dave Cupp (Jellico, TN), Nathaniel Clouse (Corbin, KY), Zak Zikovic (Strongsville, OH), Nathan Beyers (Haslett, MI), Michael McMillen (Cincinnati, OH), Jake McPherson (London, KY), and Kevin Morgan (London, KY). Also, Coach Stroud has signed a number of freshmen to come in and help in the pursuit of a Mid-South Conference Championship including Daniel Thurston (Frankfort, KY) and Eric Rupp (Courtland, OH).

The women's team was led this past season by four All Mid-South Conference members in Elyse Velte, Lauren Kachel, Lauren Louive, and Mid-South Conference Freshman of the Year Darcy Mascotti. The loss of lone senior Velte will make an impact, but other top returners looking to fill the void are Brooke White (Kettle Island, KY), Shannon Schaffer, Meghan Swope (Hamilton, OH), Sagan King (Convoy, OH), Adreanna Barrera (Dallas, TX), Ashley Campos (Houston, TX), Cassandra Devlin (Dale City, CA), Jennifer Marcum, and Audrey Springer (Pataskala, OH). The addition of a few key freshmen including Christina Moon (Sardina, OH) makes this one of the best teams Coach Stroud has put together.

"Our conference is becoming one of the best cross country conferences in the nation," said Cumberlands Head Coach Floyd Stroud. "Shawnee State University finished 4th in the nation on the men's side and they bring everyone back plus one of the top runners in the state of Ohio. We will have a young team once again but add some very good freshman. We will be very competitive within the conference and continue to get better as the year progresses. My assistant coaches always do a great job in keeping the teams motivated and I don't expect anything different this season."

The Patriots' Cross Country season will get underway on September 11th, as they travel to be a part of the Queens City Invitational in Cincinnati, OH.
