Head Coach- 15th Season

Coach Irvin begins her 15th year as head coach of the Patriots. Irvin is a native of Laurel County where she lettered four years on the basketball team at Laurel County High School and played on the 1987 Laurel County State Championship team. She was inducted into the Laurel County Hall of Fame in 2001 for her outstanding accomplishments.

Irvin came to Cumberlands after a three-year stint as an assistant coach at the University of Rio Grande. Coach Irvin earned her degree from Cumberlands in 1994 in Business Administration and Secondary Education and has also completed her Masters of Education degree from Cumberlands as well. She recently was inducted into the University of the Cumberlands Phi Beta Lambda Hall of Fame.

While attending Cumberlands, she was a four-year letterman for the Patriots. Coach Irvin's list of accolades includes Cumberlands career records in assists (734 in 124 games) and 3 point shooting percentage (.375 or 153/408) and three years as captain at Cumberlands. Irvin is a member of the Cumberlands 1000 Point Club, the 9th All-Time leading scorer and was a member of the Mid-South All Region Team and KIAC All- Conference Team. In recognition of her outstanding athletic achievements, Cumberlands recognized Irvin by inducting her into the 2007 Athletic Hall of Fame.

Since her debut in 1997 at Cumberlands, Irvin has led the Patriots to ten 20 win seasons and nine National Tournament appearances. In addition, her teams have been ranked among the top ten in the nation. In fourteen years, Coach Irvin has coached 22 Mid-South Conference All-Conference recipients, 18 Mid-South Conference Honorable Mention honorees, 30 Mid-South Conference Academic All-Conference students, 1 Mid-South Conference Freshmen of the Year, 8 WBCA Honorable Mention All-American, 11 NAIA Academic All-Americans, 2 NAIA All-American, 1 NAIA All-Tournament Team member, 1 Second Team NAIA All-American, 4 Third Team NAIA All-Americans, and 7 NAIA Honorable Mention All-Americans.

Assistant Coach- 1st Season
Doug Carter is entering his 1st season as the Assistant Coach for the Women's Basketball Patriots. 
 
Before joining the Patriots, Coach Carter served as the Head Coach for the University of Virginia-Wise Cavaliers for one season.  He also was an assistant coach at UVA-Wise for three seasons.  Over his fours years with Wise, Carter directed the recruiting efforts of the Cavaliers.  During his time as a coach with the Cavs, he brought the Appalachian Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year, 4 All-Freshman selections, and 2 First Team All-Conference selections to the program.  Two years ago, the Cavaliers women's program was named a NAIA Scholar Athlete Team for excellence in the classroom. 
 
Overall, Coach Carter boasts more than 15 years of coaching experience both as a head and assistant coach of highly competitive basketball programs.  Over his career, Carter has been known for turning programs around.  At Bishop Newman and Jersey Shore High School's, Carter took two programs that had each won a combined three games in the two years prior to his arrival.  In five combined seasons, Carter's teams posted a 108-54 record.  After leaving Jersey Shore High School, he accepted a graduate assistant position at Lock Haven University, a NCAA Division II university competing in one of the strongest conferences in the nation.  While at Lock Haven, Carter's responsibilities included recruiting, skill development, and served as the school's intramural director.  
 
Upon completing his graduate degree, he accepted a position as the head softball and women's basketball coach at the Merchant Marine Academy in 2003.  At the Academy, the NCAA named Carter's basketball program the most improved for the 2004 season.  As recruiting coordinator, he recruited three rookie of the year winners while another freshman was named honorable mention All-Skyline Conference.  In 2005, the team set the school record for wins in a season while ranking in the top five nationally in numerous defensive categories.  In 1006, he was named head softball and women's basketball coach at the Community College of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  In his first season, Carter's teams set school records for most wins in both sports.  The following season, the basketball program again set a new school record for wins in a season.  During his tenure at CCAC, Carter had two National Junior College Association All-Regino first team performers. 
 
The Williamsport, Pennsylvania native earned both his Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education and his Master's of Liberal Arts with a Sport Administration concentration from Lock Haven.

David Walden
Grad Assistant- 2nd Season
Walden is entering his second year as a member of the Patriot coaching staff.
 
David is originally from Fort Collins, CO but graduated from Boise State University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. While at the Cumberlands, Walden will be working toward his Masters in Arts of Teaching.
 
Before joining the Patriots coaching staff, Walden coached basketball and track at Ames High School in Ames, IA. During his time in Iowa, he was a member of the Little Cyclones coaching staff and helped the team make it to state two years in a row along with a runner-up finish in 2009.
 
"I am excited to be a part of Coach Irvin's staff," stated Walden. "Her passion for basketball has reflected in the team's success over the past years. The University of the Cumberlands Women's basketball has had a tradition of winning; I hope to help contribute to this team and help them win another Conference Championship, and win a National Championship."

Assistant Coach- 1st Season

Andrew Kaman, a graduate from University of Wyoming will begin his first season as assistant coach for the University of the Cumberlands Women's Basketball Team. Kaman, who is married to Andrea Kaman, comes from Lusk, Wyoming.

"The University of the Cumberlands is a great school with an outstanding academic tradition and a wide variety of programs to choose from. I look forward to being part of their community", stated Kaman.

He graduated in May of 2008, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry Education. As an undergraduate he was a member of the University of Wyoming Women's Basketball Scout Team (2006-2007 & 2007-2008 seasons).

After leaving Wyoming, he became the Head JV and assistant varsity coach at Ansbach High School in Ansbach, Germany, for two years. He also worked numerous European Showcase camps that try to get exposure for European athletes trying to play college basketball in America.

Most recently, Kaman, has worked that past two summers at Coach Wooten's Basketball Camp in Frostburg, MD and Bishop O'Connell High School.

Again, Kaman emphasizes the program here at Cumberland, "The program that Coach Irvin has built at the University of the Cumberlands is outstanding. She has a proven track record in the Mid-South Conference as well as at the national level. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to work and learn from Coach Irvin and the rest of her staff".
