Montgomery, AL – UC Baseball took to the diamond for the second time on Tuesday night as they would face the Bears of Truett McConnell University in an elimination game of the Montgomery Bracket and the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. After grabbing an early lead, it was the Bears who would rally back in a come-from-behind effort to knock off the Patriots 3-1, ending UC's season in the NAIA Opening Round Montgomery Bracket. The loss moves the Patriots' final overall record to 43-17.
The first three innings would go scoreless as both teams would put runners on, but would strand a total of nine on in that amount of time. The first run of the game would come off the bat of the Patriots' Bryan Benz (SO/Arlington, TX) in the top of the fourth in the form of a solo home run. His 10th home run of the season gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, TMU would take the lead on a two out, two-run home run by Calob Rowland, his fourth of the season, making it 2-1 Bears. Scoring would go quiet until the bottom of the seventh as the Bears would once again manufacture a run. With runners on the corners and two down, TMU would apply a successful double steal as Chris Carden would steal home to make it 3-1 Bears after seven complete.
The Pats were sat down in order in the final three innings of play as the Bears would defeat UC by a final score of 3-1, knocking off Cumberlands for the second time in as many days to eliminate them from postseason play.
The loss would go to Colton Easterwood (FR/Troy, TN) as he went five innings on the hill allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three. Jeff Rivera (SR/Toa Baja, P.R.) would finish out the game for UC throwing the final three innings allowing one earned run on two hits and a walk while fanning five on strikes. Caleb Jameson would get the win as Chris Carden picked up the save for the Bears.
