Columbia, SC – The University of the Cumberlands women's lacrosse team scored 21 seconds into the second overtime to defeat seventh-ranked Columbia 11-10 in AAC play Saturday afternoon. With the win the Patriots improve to 7-2 and 2-0 in the AAC, while the Kolas fall to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Cumberlands outscored Columbia 7-6 in the first half to take the early lead. Columbia battled back to outscore UC 4-3 in the second half to tie the game 10-10 to force overtime. After a scoreless first overtime, Becan Hennighan won the opening draw control of the second overtime. On the ensuing possession Mernyse Bruce shot connected with the back of the net 21 seconds in for the 11-10 final.
Mernyse Bruce (SO/Dacula, GA) led the way for the Patriots with four goals and an assist. Samantha Tullar (FR/Randolph Center, VT) netted four goals to extend her NAIA goal leading total to 48 goals. Tullar also scooped up a game-high five draw controls. Amanda Phillips (SO/Westerville, OH), Angela Makoski, and Shea West (SO/Hamilton, OH) each recorded a goal.
Emily Crump (FR/Dallas, TX) made a career-high ten saves to improve to 2-0 in the cage. Becan Hennighan (SO/Saint Cloud, FL) tallied five ground balls, three caused turnovers, and two draw controls, while Katherine Brewer (FR/Seymour, TN) added three ground balls and two draw controls.
Cumberlands will return to the field Wednesday, March 22, when they host eighth-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m. and live coverage is available here.
