Williamsburg, KY – UC Baseball returned to the diamond for the first time since Sunday as they hosted Viterbo University for another contest, this time a single nine-inning game. The Patriots continued their dominance over the V-Hawks, earning their third win of the season over Viterbo with a 13-2 victory. The win moves the Patriots to 19-6 overall on the season.
Both teams would be held scoreless in the first inning, but in the second, it was UC breaking open the scoring. Guillermo Villegas (FR/Petare Caracas, Venezuela) would lead off the inning and with a 1-0 count, he would send a ball towering over the left field fence for his third home run of the year, giving UC an early 1-0 lead. After reaching on an error, Landon Byron (SR/Johnson City, TN) would come home on a RBI single by Bryan Benz (SO/Arlington, TX) to make it 2-0 Patriots. With two down, Kevin Pantoja (SR/Vega Baja, P.R.) would come through again, this time with a two-run double off the wall in left-center, extending the lead to 4-0.
In the third, UC would again go to the scoreboard. After back-to-back walks to Villegas and Byron, Chase Schmittou (SR/Lincoln Park, MI) would go deep with a three-run home run, his fourth of the season, to make it 7-0 Patriots. Viterbo would score a run in the top of the fourth, but UC would answer with five runs in the bottom of the inning including a two-run double off the left field wall by Schmittou, giving him five RBIs in the game. Andrew Ramos (JR/Orange, CA) would also hit a three-run double down the left field line in the inning, giving UC a 12-1 lead.
The V-Hawks would score another run in the top of the fifth on a RBI double to make it 12-2 Patriots. UC would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as they would hold Viterbo from scoring in the seventh, ending the game via run rule after seven innings by a score of 13-2.
The win would be credited to Logan Hicks (SO/Ekron, KY) after a solid start. He finished his start going 5.0 innings allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out four. Braden Miller (FR/Corbin, KY) would finish up the contest allowing no runs on a hit and a walk while sitting two down on strikes.
The Patriots will be back in action this weekend as they will host Robert Morris University. The three game series begins on Friday with a contest that is scheduled for 4 pm with weather pending.
