Savannah, GA – The eighth-ranked University of the Cumberlands men's lacrosse team had six different players score at least one goal to help the Patriots upset sixth-ranked SCAD 11-7 Thursday afternoon at the SCAD Athletic Complex. With the win the Patriots earned their second straight victory over a ranked opponent and improve to 4-3, while the Bees fall to 5-2.
SCAD struck first as Jack Cioffi found Griffin Hunt for a goal to give the Bees a 1-0 lead with 12:41 remaining in the first quarter. Cumberlands responded a minute and a half later as Dalton Smith (FR/Springboro, OH) netted an unassisted goal to tie the game 1-1. Two minutes later Luke Wyatt (FR/Springboro, OH) found Smith cutting towards the cage for a goal to give the Patriots a 2-1 lead with 9:30 remaining. The score remained that way until the 1:15 mark as SCAD scored a goal to tie the game 2-2 after the opening period.
Reed Abahazie netted a goal 24 seconds into the second quarter to put SCAD ahead 3-2. Cumberlands got back-to-back goals from Nick DiFranco (SO/Cleveland, OH), his second of the season, and Preston Brooks (FR/Lexington, KY) to take a 4-3 advantage midway through the second quarter. UC extended their lead as Smith found Henry Quaye (SO/Germantown. MD) for a goal to give the Patriots a 5-3 advantage at the break.
Cumberlands carried the momentum in the second half as Quaye connected with Samuel Carmack (SO/Prospect, KY) for a goal six minutes in. SCAD netted two straight goals before Wyatt's shot found the back of the cage with 11 seconds remaining to extend UC's lead to 7-5 after the third quarter.
SCAD scored two of the three goals to start the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 8-7 with 6:25 left. That was the closest the Bees got as Cumberlands scored three unanswered goals to pull away for the 11-7 final. With 4:42 remaining Wyatt connected with Sam Collinson (FR/Chesapeake Beach, MD) for a goal. Wyatt and Carmack both added back-to-back unassisted goals for the 11-7 final.
Leading the way for UC was Wyatt who recorded two goals and three assists in the win. It marks the third time this season that he has tallied at least five points in a game. Quaye and Smith both recorded pair of goals and an assist, while Carmack finished with two goals. DiFranco and Jake Mitchell (SO/Gahanna, OH) each scooped up a team-high six ground balls.
Dakota Lambing (SO/West Chester, OH) made eight saves in the cage to earn the win. Kody Swann (SO/Newburg, MD) went 11-18 on the faceoffs with three ground balls. The backline of Devon McMillin (FR/Pickerington, OH), Jaret Williamson (FR/Franklin, TN), and Walker Lacey (SO/Birmingham, AL) combined for eight ground balls and three caused turnovers, while holding SCAD to seven goals, their lowest goal total of the year.
Cumberlands will return to the field Saturday, March 18, when they travel to West Point, GA to face AAC foe Point. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
