Las Vegas, NV – The University of the Cumberlands Archery Team won three individual national titles to help the Patriots claim the Intercollegiate Indoor Archery Team Championship Saturday afternoon. The Patriots had seven performances reach the medal stand.
Aaron Cook (SR/Stanford, KY) and Haley Haygood (SR/Liberty, MS) got things started for Cumberlands as the duo teamed up to win the mixed team bowhunter division, claiming UC's first individual national title of the event. The duo combined to shoot 155 to defeat Union by eight points.
Cook garnered his second individual national title in the men's bowhunter event. Cook won his first two head-to-head elimination matches to advance to the finals against Parker Battista of Mississippi College. In the finals both competitors shot 147, forcing a one arrow tie-breaker which Cook won 10-9. Teammate Caleb Dixon (FR/Pine Knot, KY) defeated Olmer Spencer 148-141 to earn bronze.
In the women's bowhunter division the Patriots finished first and second, respectfully, as Courtnie Carr (SO/Waddy, KY) outshot Samantha Rayburn (FR/Jayess, MS) 145-143 in the finals to earn UC's third individual national title. Carr, the three-seed heading into the event, upset second-ranked Haley Golden of Union 148-147 in the semifinals to advance to the finals. Rayburn also won back-to-back elimination matches before falling to Carr in the finals. Haygood dropped the bronze medal match 145-143 to finish fourth in the event.
Josh Isenhoff (FR/Gracey, KY) picked up a pair of top-four finishes during the event. He began the event teaming up with Tara Currie (FR/Sand Springs, OK) to earn bronze in the compound mixed team competition. He followed that up with a fourth place finish in the compound men division.
Kayla Dowell (SO/Brandenburg, KY) garnered Cumberlands final bronze medal of the event in the women's compound. Dowell defeated Jodi Hicks of Union 143-142, before falling to top-seed Jillian Balengee of Union 146-142. In the third-place match Dowell defeated Rebekah Matthews of Hocking College 142-139 to earn the bronze medal.
This is the second national championship that the Patriots won this season. In October Cumberlands won the 3D National Championships.
Cumberlands will return to action Thursday, April 20, when they host the South Regional Intercollegiate Outdoor Championships.
