Emerson, GA – UC Baseball concluded its weekend trip in the 2017 Perfect Game Spring Swing on Sunday with a doubleheader against Mount Mercy University and Reinhardt University. The Pats would shutout the Mustangs 4-0 before dropping their only game of the weekend against the Eagles 6-3. The split on Sunday moves the Patriots to 6-2 overall on the season.
Game one saw a gem thrown by starter Zach Hurley (SO/London, KY), who would his way out of a couple of early inning jams to earn a complete game victory over Mount Mercy University. In the bottom of the second, Chase Schmittou (SR/Lincoln Park, MI) would find his way on via a hit by pitch. Landon Byron (SR/Johnson City, TN) would continue his hot hitting by blasting a two-run shot over the left field fence to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead over the Mustangs. UC would complete the scoring in the bottom of the fifth as catcher Andrew Ramos (JR/Orange, CA) would drive one in on a sacrifice fly while Schmittou would drive in his fifth RBI of the weekend with two outs on another RBI single to make it 4-0, the final score of the ballgame. Hurley would get the win throwing seven innings allowing no runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three.
Game two versus the Eagles of Reinhardt University would become a battle from the opening pitch. UC would gain the first lead of the game in the top of the second with another two-out RBI as Roberto Prado (JR/Vega Baja, P.R.) would double before being drove in on a single by Reed Spata (JR/Taylor Mill, KY) to make it 1-0 UC. The Eagles would answer in the bottom of the third as Daniel Rodriguez would hit his second home run off the Patriots in as many days, this one a three-run shot off Brian Way (JR/Sitka, AK) to give Reinhardt a 3-1 lead.
In the sixth, UC would cut into the lead with one down as Schmittou would drive one over the right-center field fence with a solo home run to make it 3-2 Eagles. The Patriots would find a tying run in the eighth as Kevin Pantoja (SR/Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) would lead off the inning with a walk. Jesse Reyes (SR/Palm Springs, CA) would then double deep down the left field line scoring Pantoja all the way from first to knot the game up at 3-3. The Eagles would then find their own two-out rally, scoring three runs to take a 6-3 lead. UC would put two runners on in the ninth, but could not move them across the dish as the Eagles would defeat the Pats 6-3, handing UC their only loss on the five-game weekend. The loss went to Logan Hicks (SO/Ekron, KY) who went 0.2 innings allowing three runs on two hits.
Head Coach Brad Shelton commented, "I'm proud of our effort over the weekend. We had great pitching throughout the entire weekend and our defense showed a lot of tenacity. We have some stuff to clean up and get better at, but we will work out our mistakes and be ready next week."
