The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Swim teams has recently become a household name among the elite teams in the NAIA.  As both teams have consistently been ranked in the NAIA Top 5 Coaches polls the past few years, Head Coach Eric Skelly, his staff, and team welcomed the news on Tuesday from the Mid-South Conference (MSC).

Swimming has been added to the Mid-South Conference's championship lineup beginning in 2014-15, MSC Commission Eric Ward announced Tuesday.  Men and women's swimming becomes the 21st and 22nd championship sports sponsored by the Mid-South. The conference championship, to be hosted by UC, is scheduled to be contested Feb. 6th-7th in Williamsburg, Kentucky in the Dinah Taylor Aquatic Center.

By reaching championship sport status, swimming is added to the list of sports eligible for MSC President's Cup points, the conference's all-sports trophy.  Swimming student-athletes also are eligible for all-conference awards.

Commissioner Ward commented, "The Mid-South Conference is excited about the addition of swimming as a championship sport for the 2014-15 academic calendar year.  This is another opportunity for our conference to recognize even more of our members' student-athletes for their academic achievements, character development and athletic successes."

Coach Skelly added, "This is great news for the advancement of swimming in our conference.  We are currently now the only NAIA conference that has swimming as a sponsored sport, so this is great not only for the University and the MSC, but it helps the NAIA as well.  Now, it's my job to prepare my teams for a run at the MSC Championships as well as the NAIA National Title."

Bethel (Tenn.), Campbellsville (Ky.), Cumberlands (Ky.), Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) and St. Catharine (Ky.) each sponsor men's swimming while the five schools and Life (Ga.) sponsor women's swimming.
