Women's Wrestling - Mon, Jun. 30, 2014

The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Wrestling program has continued to grow over the years as they have had numerous athletes come to UC to compete among the nations most elite.  With a plethora of women who are nationally ranked coming into the program, as well as other standout recruits, this group is sure to have stellar success.  Head Coach Donnie Stephens is one of the reasons for this great success.  In just his first year as the leader of the program, he led the team to one of the best finishes in school history.  Now, Stephens is once again being honored for his great work.

Stephens recently has been selected to coach the Cadet Women's World team by USA Wrestling.  This is his 8th consecutive year of being selected as a national team coach.  His first journey will be helping conduct a camp at McKendree University where the top athletes from the nation in each age group (senior, university, junior, and cadet) gather for three weeks of training to prepare for the world championships.

"It's a great opportunity to grow and learn as a coach and to get an inside track on recruiting the nation's best in hopes they become future Patriots," commented Head Coach Donnie Stephens.

After the camp and prior to the Championships, Team USA will train for a few days where the Championships will ultimately take place in Snina, Slovakia in July.  UC women's wrestling graduate assistant Lauren Louive and wrestler DeAngela Castex (Sacramento, CA) will be taking full advantage of the camp to train hard for their upcoming competitions. "To see them training and competing with the nation's best wrestlers reminds us that UC wrestlers have a bright future and wonderful opportunities to reach the top of the food chain in the world of wrestling," added Stephens.

"It's a huge honor to coach team USA at the Cadet World Championships," said Stephens.    "Working alongside Coach Steiner and the Olympic Training Center staff at the combined world team camp is an amazing experience and an ideal learning environment."

In addition to making the trip overseas, Stephens will continue to go hard out on the recruiting trail to continue to build a solid roster for the 2014-2015 season.
