The University of the Cumberlands' (UC) Softball team was back in Mid-South Conference (MSC) action on Saturday at home as they took on the Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson College. This would be a tough match up for the Patriots as Lindsey Wilson currently leads the conference with a 21-3 record against MSC opposition. The UC ladies didn't let that intimidate them though as they fought hard against the Raiders in both games. Unfortunately, Lindsey would take both games from the Patriots as they were defeated 5-1 in the first game and lost the second game 8-0 in a short-game fashion.
The first game started off as somewhat of a pitcher's duel. The Patriot defense looked outstanding as they stood behind pitcher Kenly Lambert (Fairview, TN) and held the Raiders to only one run throughout the first four innings. Unfortunately, Lindsey would score 3 more in the top of the 5th inning on a 3-run homerun. UC didn't give up though, as Tori Poma (Las Vegas, NV) started off the bottom of the 5th with a single to left field. After she advanced to second on a passed ball, Poma would move to third on a Cassandra Johnson (London, KY) groundout. With two outs, Kenly Lambert would be put in a tough position as she stepped up to the plate. Lambert came through for the Patriots as she hit the ball hard to left-center to score Poma, putting the UC ladies on the board. Sadly, Cumberlands would be unable to score any more runs on the game, and the Raiders would take the win with a final score of 5-1.
On the mound for game one was Kenly Lambert, who pitched a total of 7.0 innings and allowed 5 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks. Lambert's record now moves to 1-4 on the season with a 4.55 ERA.
The second game of the day started off a little rough for pitcher Nichol Chesley (Dayton, OH). Lindsey Wilson's offense was able to score 3 runs in the top of the first inning, putting UC behind from the start. Chesley battled back, but the Raiders were determined to hit and they were successful in grabbing a total of 8 runs through 4 innings. A couple of Patriot ladies were able to grab hits throughout the game including Samantha Payne (Rockcastle, KY) and Missy Buchanan (Science Hill, TN), who both had one a piece. Unfortunately, UC wouldn't be able to get those runs back and the game would end after 5 innings with a final score of 8-0.
Nichol Chesley would start game two on the mound and pitch a total of 3.1 innings allowing 8 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks while striking out 1. Kristen Moran (Barbourville, KY) would relieve Chesley in the 4th inning making her second appearance on the mound this season. Moran did a nice job of relief work as she pitched a total of 1.2 innings allowing no runs to score off of 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 1. Unfortunately, Chesley would take the loss against the Raiders, which moves her record to 9-13 on the season with a 3.07 ERA.
The Patriot ladies will be back on the road Monday, April 21st, as they travel to Portsmouth, OH to take on the Bears of Shawnee State University. The first pitch of the MSC match-up is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
