On Wednesday April 16th, the University of the Cumberlands (UC) baseball team traveled to Danville, Kentucky to take on NCAA D-III opponent Centre College. After the Colonels took a 3-2 lead in the second, the Patriots went on to score 8 unanswered runs to pull away for the 10-3 victory.
In the top of the 2nd, Trent Abner (London, KY) put the first run on the board with a groundout to second scoring Zach McRoberts (Hillsboro, KY) who led the inning off with a walk. Hibraim Cordova (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) then hit a hard one hop line drive at the shortstop who misplayed the ball allowing Matt Madrigal (LeMoore, CA) to score for the 2-0 lead after he singled on a drag bunt. In the bottom half, Centre came back to take the 3-2 lead.
However, the Patriots refused to give in and fought back to take a 4-3 lead in the fifth on a double down the third base line by Jared Martin (Cynthiana, KY) scoring Claudio Valencia (Yuma, AZ) who singled and Keith Tidwell (Smiths, AL) who walked.
UC added to the lead in the sixth on a double by Cordova to deep right centerfield scoring Luis Hernandez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) who walked and Abner who singled to increase the lead to 6-3.
In the ninth, Cumberlands padded the lead more scoring 4 runs to take a commanding 10-3 lead. Tidwell doubled down the third base line and scored on a double by Martin to deep left field. Martin scored on a single to left by McRoberts who later scored on a single by Abner. Madrigal would score the last run on a single by Cordova.
On the mound for the Patriots was Ricky Osorio (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) who went the distance throwing a complete game going 9 innings allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits with 8 strikeouts as he picked up the win. The loss went to Centre's Lucas McAvoy.
Cumberlands, now 25-18 on the season, are back in action on Thursday as they host Indiana University-Southeast at home for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 pm.
