The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Baseball Patriots were in action on Tuesday as they hosted Asbury University (AU) in a mid-week doubleheader. The Patriots exploded for 25 runs in the two games on the day, coming away with a sweep of the Eagles by scores of 11-1 in game one and 14-9 in game 2.
In game one, it was an offensive outpouring in the opening inning for UC as they pushed 6 runs across, giving them an early 6-0 lead. The Patriots would push one run across in each of the next two innings before putting a 3 spot on the board in the 4th, giving the Patriots an 11-0 lead. The Eagles would get one run in the 6th, but that was it as the Patriots would take game one by a score of 11-1.
Sophomore Ricky Osorio (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) would get the complete game victory on the mound going 7 innings and allowing just the one earned run on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out a career high 11. Hibraim Cordova (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) would continue his hot streak at the plate going 2-3 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored. Claudio Valencia (Yuma, AZ) also was strong at the dish going 3-3 with a double, an RBI, and 2 runs scored. The big sticks were pulled on Tuesday by Keith Tidwell (Smiths, AL) and Jared Martin (Cynthiana, KY). Tidwell went 2-3 with a 3 run home run in the game while Martin went 1-1 with a solo home run, 1 walk, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBIs.
Game two started a little bit turned around from game 1 as Asbury jumped out early to a 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st. UC would answer right back though as they hung 7 runs up in the bottom of the inning, taking a 7-4 lead. The Eagles would then jumped up quickly again in the 2nd as they took a 9-7 lead, but once again it was UC bringing it back to an even keel at 9-9 after two full innings of play. UC would put one run on the board in the 3rd before adding 4 more in the bottom of the 6th to take a 14-9 win.
Cordova would once again prove why he's one of the hottest hitters in the MSC going 2-3 with a double, a solo home run, a walk, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. Jared Martin was crucial in this game as well going 2-4 from the dish with the game tying two-run home run in the 2nd, driving in 2 runs on the game while scoring 3 runs as well including stealing home once. Trent Abner (London, KY) stepped up big in the game as well going 2-3 with 3 RBIs, 2 runs scored, and a stolen base. The win would go to UC's Jake Wakeland (Delton, MI) as he entered the game in relief going 3.1 innings allowing no runs on just 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2. Anthony Webster (Spring Hill, FL) would earn a 6-out save, his 7th save of the season, as he allowed no runs on 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 1.
