The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Basketball team is proud to announce that senior Jessica Upchurch (Stanford, KY) has been named the Mid-South Conference (MSC) Women's Basketball Champions of Character. The award is voted on by the conference's athletic directors and is chosen based on their academic and athletic achievement, campus and community leadership, future ambition and demonstration of the five core character values of the NAIA.
Upchurch has been a regular face in the starting line-up over the past 4 seasons. An academic all-conference member from 2012-2014 as well as an NAIA Scholar Athlete this year, Upchurch has also been a part of a Mid-South Conference Championship in 2012. Besides her accomplishments in the classroom and on the court, Upchurch has volunteered at her hometown church (Stanford Baptist Church), visited nursing homes and local elementary schools in Williamsburg, and taken mission trips to Peru and Jamaica while being scheduled to visit Africa this summer.
"Throughout my college experience, I have learned so much about myself and what I want to achieve in my life," Upchurch said. "I stay true to myself by being respectful to others, no matter what the situation may be. I find an importance in representing my family, my school, and myself by respecting every person, every athlete, every official or every coach. Even more, I have developed a passion for helping people and giving people the best thing you could give them: love."
