Shorter University

The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men's Wrestling team was back in action today at the Intramural Gym in the O. Wayne Rollins Center as they hosted the Hawks of Shorter University (SU) on Patriot Senior Day.  The senior wrestlers as well as other team members gave it their all, but their efforts weren't enough as they were defeated 21-15.

Senior Javier Carbajal (Homestead, FL) started things off for the Patriots as he wrestled against Ben Smith of Shorter at 125 lbs. This would be an evenly weighted match, but Smith was too much in the final seconds as Carbajal was defeated in a 9-7 decision, giving SU the early 3-0 lead.

Andrew Tillman (Abbeville, SC) was also recognized for his accomplishments as a senior and faced off against Jesse Jones in a 133 lb. match-up. This would be another close match, but Tillman was unable to finish things, as he was defeated in a 9-6 decision, but tying the score at 3-3.

Calob Perkins (Miamisburg, OH) was the third senior on the mat at 141 lbs. He took on Demarcus Thomas, and went point-by-point with him, but was able to come out on top with the 4-2 win, putting UC in the lead 6-3.

Steven Melara (Pomona, CA) kept things going for the Patriots as he was able to defeat 149 lb. Brandon Dyer in a 7-1 decision, extending UC's lead to 9-3. Isaac King (Waycross, GA) attempted to extend UC's streak but was unable to defeat his opponent Kannon Madden as he was defeated by pinfall at 55.7 in the first period, then tying the dual at 9-9.

UC would drop their next match as senior Jacob Stephens (Brunswick, OH) competed at 165 lbs. and fell to Wally Figaro by pinfall at 1:42 in the first period giving SU the 15-9 lead.

Brocky Leidecker (Orient, OH) was up next on the mat for the Patriots as he faced Gregory Lane in a 174 lb. match-up. He gave great effort but was defeated in a 3-1 decision continuing SU's lead to 18-9. Brandon Rogers (Springfield, OH) would attempt to get things going for the Patriots again but was unable to defeat his opponent Terrence Smith and was defeated in a 5-3 decision, extending SU's lead to 21-9.

Seniors Sam Johnson (River Falls, WI) and Courtney Freeman (Riverdale, GA) were the final two Patriots on the mat, and they were able to finish their last home match with a pair of wins. Johnson was able to defeat Joe Hinchman in a 3-1 decision, putting UC within 9 points of catching up with the Hawks making the score 21-12. Freeman was the final Patriot on the mat and went up against a tough competitor in Marlen Morgan in a 285 lb. match-up. He was able to come away with an 8-3 decision win, but this was not enough for the Patriots to take over the lead as they were defeated by a final score of 21-15.

The Patriots will continue the remainder of their season on the road. They will travel to Marietta, GA on February 22nd to compete in the NAIA Eastern Qualifier. Wrestling is set to begin at 9:00 a.m.
