The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men's Wrestling team is coming off of an impressive victory over #10 Cumberland University by a final of 23-16. With the win, the Patriots should solidify themselves once again this week as a top 10 team in the NAIA. Numerous Patriots came away victorious in the dual meet, but one Patriot stood out among the rest and for that earned recognition this week by the Mid-South Conference (MSC).
Senior Sam Johnson (River Falls, WI) was named the Mid-South Conference Wrestler of the Week, conference officials announced on Tuesday. This is the first time Johnson has won the award this season.
Sam won his only match of the week helping the #9 ranked Patriots defeat the #10 ranked Bulldogs last Thursday. Johnson earned a 10-2 major decision over Scott Stewart, who is ranked #12 nationally at 197 pounds, to kick start the Patriots en route to their victory. Before Sam's victory in the 197 pound round, the Bulldogs of Cumberland Univ. was leading the match 10-0.
Johnson, currently ranked #6 at 197 pounds nationally, improves his overall record this season to 24-7 and 2-0 in duals this season with the win. The Patriots victory moves the team to 2-2 on the season in duals and 1-0 against Mid-South Conference opposition.
The Patriots will be back in action on Friday January 31st as they travel to Columbia, KY to take on the NAIA #6 ranked Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson College in a big Mid-South Conference dual. Matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm.
