The University of the Cumberlands Men and Women's Swim team had a fantastic weekend as they defeated both the Centre College Colonels and Asbury Eagles on January 17th and 18th.  The Patriots took on Centre College in their final home dual of the season on January 17th.  Both teams placed well above the Colonels, with the men's team finishing 116.5-87.5 and the women's with a score of 111-87.

First place finishes for Cumberlands included:


• Grace Van Ryckegham (Franklin, TN): 1000 Yard Freestyle-11:19.32
• Igor Dozortsev (Moscow, Russia): 1000 Yard Freestyle – 10:23.57
• Charlotte Parent (Braine-l'allaud, Belgium): 200 Yard Freestyle – 1:57.48; 100 Yard Butterfly – 58.77
• Marc Tahull (Barcelona, Spain): 200 Yard Freestyle – 1:49.38; 100 Yard Breaststroke – 1:02.22
• Melissa Peplinski (Spokane Valley, WA): 50 Yard Freestyle – 25.45; 100 Yard Breaststroke – 1:10.05
• Thalys Caixeta (Uberlandia, Brazil): 50 Yard Freestyle – 21.80; 100 Yard Freestyle – 48.15

• 400 Yard Medley Relay: Justin Natyzak (Camas, WA), Tahull, Caixeta, and Dillon Cleavenger (Camarillo, CA) – 3:39.18

The Patriots then traveled to Asbury University on January 18th to go head-to-head against Asbury University.  Both the men and women's teams crushed the Eagles, with the men finishing with a score of 124-71 and the women with a score of 128-75.

• 200 Yard Freestyle Relay (Men): Cleavenger, Cesar Martins (Uberlandia, Brazil), Jordan Gramling (Cape Giradeau, MO), and Caixeta – 1:28.37

Head Coach Eric Skelly commented, "I was very happy with the way the team performed this weekend.  After a solid meet against a good program like Centre, we were able to step up on a quick turnaround against Asbury.  I feel like the team is moving in the right direction and we are doing everything we need to be successful at the National Championships."

The Patriots also honored their 2013-2014 senior class on January 18th as eight members of the two teams will graduate.  Elizabeth Davis (Van Wert, OH), Nathan Noll (Columbus, IN), Greg Olson (Fortson, GA), Jordan Hammett (Bakersfield, CA), Clay Cyrus (Morehead, KY), Horn, Natyzak and Botill were honored for their outstanding commitment and dedication to the University of the Cumberlands Swim team.

The men's team will travel on January 24th and 25th to Bowling Green, KY to take on Western Kentucky University, while the women take on Western, Vanderbilt University and Marshall University. The meet is set to start on 6:00 p.m. on the 24th and 1:00 p.m. on the 25th.
