The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Basketball team was back in action this Saturday as they hosted the University of the Pikeville (UPike) Bears. Although the Patriot Ladies took a comfortable lead in the final 10 minutes, the Bears clawed their way back, forcing the game to come down to the final seconds. With strong free throw shooting as well as solid defense, Cumberlands was able to squeak out with a 90-87 victory. The Patriots now move to 10-6 overall and 5-2 in Mid-South Conference (MSC) play.
The Bears came into the O. Wayne Rollins with fury, refusing to fall apart after each spark or mighty run made by the Patriots. A back-and-forth battle almost the entire game, the Patriots were able to buckle down and knock down free throws in the waning minutes. With a dose of team defense to seal the deal, Cumberlands demonstrated the composure and unity every team strives for throughout the season. The Patriot ladies were led by Julie Haye (Polo, IL) who had a career-high 24 points as well as 7 rebounds, while Brooke Forsythe (Brunswick, OH) also dominated play in the paint posting 20 points. Jill Herman (Powell, TN) had another brilliant offensive performance scoring 19 points, ripping down 6 rebounds, and dishing out 4 assists. Jackie Alexander (Brodhead, KY) also reached double-digit scoring, chipping in 10 points and 3 steals.
The Patriots will look to improve their record on the road as they travel to Lindsey Wilson on Thursday night to battle the Blue Raiders. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
