The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Football program is in the midst of preparations for their NAIA Football Championship Series (FCS) Opening Round game against the Fighting Bees of St. Ambrose University.  With their win last week at Bluefield, the Patriots secured a perfect 10-0 regular season record and a Mid-South Conference (MSC) East Division Championship.  One player stood out for the Patriot defense and was honored by the Beyond Sports Network (BSN).

Senior defensive lineman Nick Smith (Knoxville, TN) was named a BSN Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.  Smith was a force to be reckoned with in the middle of the line on Saturday against the Rams of Bluefield.  He ended the game with 4 total tackles (2 solo), 3 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks.  Nick and the rest of the Patriot defense held Bluefield to just 14 points while forcing 2 turnovers.

Smith and the Patriots look to keep that momentum going into the postseason as they will be in action on Saturday against #16 St. Ambrose University in the opening round of the NAIA FCS.  Kickoff for the game is set for 12:00 pm.  Tickets for the game will be $10 at the gate.
