Cross Country - Tue, Oct. 8, 2013

The University of the Cumberlands (UC) cross country programs have competed in three meets so far this season.  With the teams earning solid finishes at the Queen City Invitational, the Cedarville Invitational, and now the Greater Louisville Classic, two Patriots once again stood out among the rest this week and for that were honored by the Mid-South Conference (MSC) yet again.  This is the second time the Patriot duo has earned MSC Player of the Week together.

Junior Jonathan Gears (Andover, OH) has been named the Mid-South Conference Cross Country Athlete of the week, conference officials announced on Monday.  It is the second time this season and in his cross country career that Gears has won the award.  He previously earned the award on September 9th. Gears completed the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic's 8,000 meters in 25 minutes and 37 seconds on Saturday.  Racing in the Blue Division, Gears crossed the finish line in sixth place, just 10 seconds off the winning time within the 289-man race.  Gears helped the Patriots to an eighth place finish in the 25-team field with 255 team points.

Gears once again was not alone capturing MSC Runner of the Week Award for cross country, Cumberland junior teammate Danielle Hoop (Owenton, KY) was named the Women's Mid-South Conference Cross Country Athlete of the week, conference officials announced on Monday.  The weekly honor is the third of the season for Hoop.  The conference honor also marks the third of Hoop's career.  She picked up the award on Sept. 9th and Sept. 23rd this season.

Hoop finished eighth at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic on Saturday.  She ended the 5,000-meter race with a time of 18 minutes and 52 seconds which the second fastest NAIA time in the Blue Division race.  Hoop's finish helped the Patriots to a 12th place team finish in the 25-team race.

These two along with the rest of their Patriot teammates will now hope to continue their success as they will participate in the Wilmington Invitational after a bye week.  This meet will be held on October 18th in Ohio.
