The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Patriot Volleyball program was eager to kick off the 2013 season as they traveled to Athens, TN to take on Tennessee Wesleyan College (TWC) on Wednesday. The Patriot ladies opened up the season with a bang as they defeated the Bulldogs with a 3-1 victory.
Cumberlands played solid during game one, but fell short with a close 22-25 loss. Determined not to give up, the Patriots came back swinging in game two with an impressive 25-16 win over the Bulldogs. The UC ladies used their newfound momentum to gain two more victories to seal the match and capture their first win for the season. Final scores of the games were 22-25, 25-16, 25-20, and 26-24.
Kelsey Eastham (Urbana, OH) led the team offensively with a total of 13 kills on the night. Senior Megan Schulte (Beavercreek, OH) followed closely behind with 9 kills and freshman Megan Ganser (Waterloo, WI) stepped up with 9 kills and 5 block assists of her own. Senior Abby Dundon (Lexington, KY) pitched in 17 assists and 3 service aces while sophomore Samantha Stuckwisch (Seymour, IN) contributed a total of 19 assists. Sophomore Sara Hayek (Knoxville, TN) led the girls in defensive digs with 13. In addition, freshman Sydney Beck (Lebanon, OH) and Stuckwisch both provided 11 digs.
The UC ladies are scheduled to host their first tri-match of the year this coming Saturday, August 31st. They will take on the Lady Mountaineers of Berea College at 3pm and follow up with the Dalton State College Roadrunners at 7pm.
