The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men's soccer team is looking to continue their climb to the top of the Mid-South Conference (MSC). After a 2012 season which saw UC go 9-7-1, the Patriots hope to get back to that 10 win plateau and make some noise in the MSC.
The Mid-South Conference thinks highly of the Patriots picking them to finish 4th out of 10 teams in the MSC preseason polls. This is a slight drop for UC as they have been picked 3rd in each of the last 3 seasons. UC received 56 total voting points.
It should come as no surprise that Lindsey Wilson College was picked to finish 1st with 81 points and 9 first place votes. The Blue Raiders lost in the NAIA National Championship semi-finals to eventual national champion Belhaven University. Right behind Lindsey Wilson was the University of Rio Grande who received 73 points and the final 1st place vote. Picked to finish third was Campbellsville University who received 60 points. It was Cumberland University who rounded out the top 5 as they were chosen to finish 5th in the MSC with 55 total points.
Head Coach Brenton Benware knows this season will be different than years past, but is excited for the opportunity. Benware stated, "We will be fairly young. We do have a lot of talent though and it will be encouraging to see how they develop in the future." As for the Mid-South Conference, Coach Benware knows just how tough it is to compete in the MSC stating, "Our conference continues to grow more competitive every year. Lindsey Wilson and Rio Grande are always tough conference games, but we also have teams like Cumberland University and Campbellsville University among others that have grown much more competitive."
Look for this group of Patriots to come out with excitement as they will start their 2013 campaign with a scrimmage against Carson-Newman at home on August 24th at 12:30 pm.
