The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Football program is preparing for its 2013 campaign as they have a lot to prove to the Mid-South Conference (MSC) and the NAIA. With the first game of the season just over 7 weeks away, the Patriots have announced a time change that will better benefit everyone.
The "Battle for the Brass Lantern" game against Union College on August 31st has been changed to a 12:00 pm kickoff time, an hour and a half earlier than previously scheduled. This move was made to ensure that the game could be carried live on WYMT-TV in the local viewing area.
Dubbed one of the biggest rivalries in the NAIA, the Bulldogs and Patriots will go head-to-head on the gridiron for the 29th time in the series history. The Patriots currently hold a 19-9 all-time record over the rival Bulldogs from Barbourville. The rivalry between University of the Cumberlands and Union College dates back to the early days of Patriot football. In fact, the first three games Williamsburg Institute ever played were against Union, in 1905.
The Brass Lantern was introduced as a traveling trophy for this rivalry in 1985 with the winner of the contest keeping the trophy until the following contest. The lantern represents the coal mining industry, paying homage to major industry in southeastern Kentucky where both colleges are located.
The Patriots will look to win their 2nd straight Battle for the Brass Lantern this season after defeating Union in Barbourville last season 48-14, the largest margin of victory ever in the series' history. Kickoff once again is now set for 12:00 pm on August 31st.
