There is no secret about the success of the University of the Cumberlands (UC) football team in recent history. Since head coach John Bland has been at the helm of the Patriots, UC has become a household name at the top of the NAIA football landscape. This season, UC looks to have its best season yet as they try to rebound off a superb 2012 campaign that saw them go 10-2 with a 1st round 42-24 victory over Mid-America Nazarene. UC is now being noticed by not only the NAIA, but other national sports media outlets.
The Sporting News just released its 2013-14 college football preview and UC received major attention. The Patriots were voted Preseason Top 5 in the NAIA polls with 3 Preseason All-Americans, the most of any other school. Senior defensive and offensive standouts Adrian Hightower (Macon, GA), Weston Hazelhurst (Clinton, TN), and Terrance Cobb (Knoxville, TN) all received this high honor. UC was not the only Mid-South Conference team chosen as Georgetown College was ranked just ahead of UC with a 4th place ranking. Obviously this is huge for the Patriots as they continue to work towards the ultimate goal of the school's first ever NAIA National Football Championship. This could be a season to remember for UC.
First published in 1886, Sporting News was known as "The Bible of Baseball" throughout the first half of the 20th century. Focusing exclusively on America's Pastime, Sporting News captured the golden years of the game with amazing photography from renowned photographer, Charles Conlon, reporting throughout baseball, box scores and more.
The current Sporting News has expanded to cover seven sports: MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, College Football, College Basketball and NASCAR.
