Men's Golf - Wed, May 22, 2013

The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men's Golf program just finished up another solid season on Friday at the NAIA National Championship in Salem, Oregon.  With a week of ups and downs on the course, the Patriots were able to finish out the year with another top 10 finish in the national tournament.

On Tuesday May 14th, the Patriots took to Creekside Golf Course for day one of the tournament.  Junior Hugo Alvarez Asorey (Oviedo, Spain) led the way for UC in the round shooting a 1-over 73.  Senior Matt Walton (Lancashire, United Kingdom) closely followed shooting a 3-over 75.  Alastair Tidcombe (Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada) finished day one with a 4-over 76.  Senior Niclas Rigbrandt (Nykoping, Sweden) was next with a 6-over 78.  Rounding out the team was freshman Isac Lambartsson (Njutanger, Sweden) shooting a 7-over 79 on the round.  UC finished round one in 13th place shooting a 302.

On Wednesday, the Patriots came out with a much better round and made a nice move up the standings shooting a 292 on the day and moving up to a tie for 6th place.  Tidcombe came back with a great 1-under 71.  Walton also improved on his 1st day with a 1-over 73.  Rigbrandt also made a huge jump from day one as he shot an even par 72 on the round.  Lambartsson also improved on his first day as he shot a 4-over 76 while Asorey rounded out the team shooting a 2nd round 9-over 81.

In the 3rd round on Thursday, the Patriots would slip a bit shooting a 298 as a team moving to 8th place in the tournament.  Rigbrandt, Walton, and Tidcombe all ended the day tied at 32nd place after shooting 73, 75, and 76 respectively for a total of 223 (+7).  Asorey shot a 74 in the third round for a total of 228 (+12) ending the day tied for 52nd place.  Lambartsson would round out the team shooting a 3rd round 79 to total a 234 (+18) and tied for 74th place.

The 4th and final round for the Patriots was unfortunately not what they were looking for as they finished the tournament with a 301 and a total score of 1193 (+41) which was good for 9th place overall.  Tidcombe finished the tournament with an even par round of 72 to finish with a score of 295 (+7) and tied for 20th place.  Walton followed closely behind with a 4-over 76 in the final round for a total of 299 (+11) and tied for 34th place.  Rigbrandt shot a 5-over 77 for a total of 300 (+12) to place tied for 36th.  Asorey came next shooting a 4th round 79 to finish with a total of 307 (+19) and in 58th place.  Finishing out the team was Lambartsson who shot a final round 76 for a total of 310 (+22) and in 67th place.

Head Coach Chris Kraftick commented, "Obviously we didn't finish where we hoped going into the week.  We didn't play our best golf.  Looking at the big picture, it was our 3rd straight top 10 finish and in many areas statistically it was the best year we have had.  These guys were an honor to coach.  Just wish I could have done more in Oregon."
