The University of the Cumberlands (UC) track and field team will have four athletes traveling north to Marion, Indiana to compete in the NAIA Outdoor Track National Championships at Indiana Wesleyan on May 23rd to the 25th.
The women's team only had one Patriot hit national marks as sophomore Danielle Hoop (Owenton, KY) qualified for Nationals in the women's 1500 meter run and 3,000 meter steeplechase. Hoop will only be running the 3,000 meter steeplechase to focus on grasping another All-American spot. Hoop has hit the automatic qualifying standard with a time of 10:56.99 which seeds her 4th going into nationals. Hoop will run in the preliminaries on Thursday May 23rd in hopes to advance to finals on Saturday May 25th at 2:00 PM.
Three men from the Patriots track team hit qualifying standards. One lone sprinter qualified in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dash. Senior Albert Huntley (Atlanta, GA) is currently ranked 3rd in the 100 meter dash with an automatic qualifying time of 10.33 seconds and is ranked 4th in the 200 meter dash also with another automatic qualifying time of 21.27 seconds. He will compete in the preliminaries for the 200 meter dash on Thursday, 100 meter dash on Friday, and hopefully the finals for each on Saturday.
The two men's distance runners who have qualified are senior Landon Hamilton (Andover, OH) and sophomore Jonathan Gears (Andover, OH). Hamilton has qualified for the 10,000 meter run with a time of 31:12.45 which was good enough to hit the "B" standard for nationals. Hamilton is currently ranked 14th in the event and will take place on that Thursday night of Nationals at 8:45 PM. Gears qualified in the 5,000 meter run with an automatic qualifying time of 14:33.94. Gears currently sits at the number ten spot in the rankings. He will have to run in the preliminaries on Friday night, in hopes to advance to the finals on Saturday that will take place at 5:55 PM.
