This past weekend, select athletes on the University of the Cumberlands (UC) track and field team traveled to Berea College in Berea, KY to compete in the Berea College Invitational. Both teams did well as numerous athletes came away with top finishes.
On the women's side of the competition, sophomore Taylor Mayes (Knoxville, TN) won the women's shot put with a throw of 11.11 meters. She also placed second in the discus throw with a toss of 30.03 meters. Also placing first was sophomore Sara Meadors (Williamsburg, KY) in the javelin throw with a throw of 28.72. Lastly, freshman Samantha Proffitt (London, KY) placed first in the women's heptathlon with 3195 points.
Also placing for the Patriot ladies was senior Ashley Campos (Houston, TX) placing 4th in the 5000 meter race walk with a time of 32:59.27 followed by her teammate sophomore Melissa Roark (Louisville, KY) in 5th place with a time of 37:22.27. In the 100 meter hurdles, freshman Shawnee Holbrook placed 4th with a time of 17.55. Senior Audrey Springer (Pataskala, OH) finished 4th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:39.05. In the 5000 meter run, senior Christine Moon (Sardinia, OH) placed 3rd with a time of 20:08.13 followed by teammate junior Shelby Gibbons (Hamersville, OH) with a time of 20:40.04. Sophomore Shanice Carbon (Owensboro, KY) placed 5th in the women's triple jump with a leap of 9.93 meters. Finally in the pole vault, freshman Olivia Cepak (South Lyon, MI) placed fourth with a vault of 2.29 meters. The women's team placed 6th of 9 teams with 77 points on the day.
On the men's team, freshman Kevin Ping (Somerset, KY) placed first in the men's decathlon with 5288 points. Freshman Troy Kemp (Clay County, KY) also placed in the decathlon earning 4th place with 4730 points. In the men's 3000 meter steeplechase, sophomore Eric Phillips (New Castle, KY) placed 2nd with a time of 11:02.12 while Ben Rawe (Melbourne, KY) also placed 4th in the event with a time of 11:20.26. Freshman Kevin Rogers-Ross (Lexington, KY) placed 4th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.27. In the triple jump, freshman Dallas Defoor (Gainesville, GA) placed 3rd with a jump of 12.45 meters. Junior Courtney Freeman (Riverdale, GA) earned a 5th place finish in the discus throw with a toss of 35.45 meters. In the shot put event, sophomore Christian Brislenn (Franklin, OH) placed 3rd with a throw of 13.06 meters. Brislenn also placed 5th in the hammer throw with a throw of 40.21 meters which is also a new school record. The men's team placed 6th overall of 9 teams with 57 points.
Next week, the Patriots will be traveling to Georgia to compete in the Emory Classic on March 29th and 30th.
