The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Golf team has started their 2013 spring season off with a bang, earning a top 3 finish and their first of hopefully many tournament victories this season. With their efforts this past week, one Patriot in particular caught the eye of those around the Mid-South Conference (MSC) and for that has earned honors.
Patriot sophomore Shannon Bishop (Glasgow, KY) is the Mid-South Conference Women's Golfer of the Week, conference officials announced on Tuesday. The weekly award is the first of Bishop this season and of her career.
Bishop captured the individual title at the Tennessee Wesleyan Spring Invite last week to claim the conference honor. Shannon shot 155 (80 in 1st round, 75 in 2nd round) over two days at the Springbrook Golf and Country Club to win by five strokes over teammate and last week's golfer of the week Laura Beth Harris. After trailing by a stroke following her opening round 80, Bishop posted one of only three rounds in the 70s to capture the title.
Bishop also led the NAIA #13 ranked Patriot ladies to the tournament team title. UC shot a team-total 654 (332-322) to beat host Tennessee Wesleyan, who finished second, by 36 strokes.
The Patriot ladies will be back in action on March 25th-26th as they host the 3rd Annual Women's SEKI/MSC Spring Invite.
