The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men's Basketball Team suffered a tough loss on Thursday as they traveled to Bluefield College to battle a talented Rams team. Although the Patriots put up a valiant effort, the Rams were just too much for the Patriots, pulling away with a 76-64 victory. With the loss, the Patriots move to 18-11 overall on the season and 9-10 in Mid-South Conference (MSC) play.
Trailing by barely a basket after the first half of play, the Patriots remained close the entire game until the waning minutes, where the Rams stamina proved to be too much for Cumberlands to handle. Although the Patriots out-rebounded the Rams 38-29, Bluefield's offense shot nearly 50% from the field for the night as well as 50% from beyond the arc.
The Patriots were led by senior Benito Santiago Jr. (Coamo, Puerto Rico) who scored a career high 29 points, completing yet another double-double with 14 rebounds. Santiago Jr.'s defensive effort was just as strong as the forward also tallied 3 blocks and 2 steals in 36 minutes of play. Antonio Bumpus (Columbus, OH) added 11 points of his own while James Archie (Jackson, MS) scored 10 points on the night.
The Patriots will look to close out the regular season with a win as they travel to Cumberland University on Monday night to face the Bulldogs on their home floor. Tip-off is set for 8 pm.
