The University of the Cumberlands (UC) softball team rounded out their second week of competition on Wednesday, February 20th. In their first double-header of the week, the Patriots traveled to Barbourville, KY but failed to overcome the Bulldogs of Union College in the first game, but came back after a final rally to win the second game. In UC's 2nd double header for the week, the Patriot ladies hosted Berea College on Wednesday and fell short in both games to the Mountaineers for another two losses on the week.
In game one of the double header against the Bulldogs, the Patriots struggled in the first 4 innings scoring no runs while giving up 7 runs. The Patriots then tried their best with a rally in the final inning scoring 3 runs in the 6th inning alone. In the top of the 6th, Patriot third baseman Gloriann Cordero (London, KY) came in with a big double scoring the first two runs of the game for UC. The Patriots tried staying hot on the bats, but only scored 1 run in the final inning as they lost to Union 8-5.
In game two it was a different story. The Patriots took the lead early, scoring 3 runs in the first inning and 2 in the second. The Bulldogs fought back though, taking the lead by putting runs on the board in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, but was cursed with errors in the 6th inning allowing 4 runs to score for UC. The game ended with a final score of 10-7 and the Patriots taking their first win of the season. Kenly Lambert (Fairview, TN) went 3-4 on the game with a double and an RBI. Tabitha Benson (Cookeville, TN) and Brittny Lovelace (Middletown, OH) both added home runs for UC in the game.
On Wednesday in game one against Berea College, the Patriots came ready to play and kept the game close taking the game into extra innings where the Mountaineers' scored 3 runs on a couple of Patriot errors. Berea would hold the Patriots in the bottom of the inning to just one run giving the Mountaineers a 6-4 win in 8 innings over UC. Jessica Speake (Lancaster, KY) did very well at the plate trying to help herself out as she also was the starting pitcher in the game. Speake went 3-4 on the game with 3 singles and 2 RBIs. She also threw a complete game going 8 innings allowing 6 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5.
The second game of the day looked a bit brighter early for UC, but errors were a nuisance for the Patriots in this one. After taking a 1-0 lead after the 2nd inning, the Patriots would commit 6 errors in the game giving Berea an 8-4 win over UC. Rachel Akins (London, KY) went 3-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs. Ashleigh Hopf (Dayton, OH) also went 2-3 at the dish with an RBI and 2 runs scored. One run out of the 8 scored on the Patriots in game two was earned.
