The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Softball team opened up their 2013 season last Friday as they traveled to Tennessee Wesleyan College (TWC) for a doubleheader. The Patriots fell to the Bulldogs in both games, 4-3 in game one and 4-3 in game two, giving them a 0-2 record to open the season.
In game one, the Bulldogs and the Patriots were tied with three runs coming out of the third inning. The Bulldogs put another run on the board in the fourth. The Patriots held them to only four runs, but could not come back with any more runs letting their first game slip. Lefty Kenly Lambert (Fairview, TN) went 3-4 at the plate for the Patriots scoring two runs. Jessica Speake (Lancaster, KY) pitched a complete game 6 innings allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits and 1 walk while striking out 1.
The Patriots came out early with a vengeance in game two of the doubleheader and took an early 1-0 lead in the 1st. The Patriots added two more in the 4th while TWC scored runs in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th innings respectively to take another 4-3 victory over UC. Tabitha Benson (Cookeville, TN) had a great game going 2-3 with an RBI. Pitcher Kenly Lambert had a solid day on the rubber pitching 5 innings giving up 7 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), 1 strikeout and 3 walks. Ashleigh Hopf (Dayton, OH) also was in the circle going one inning giving up only 2 hits and 1 earned run.
The Patriots will be back on the diamond on February 19th on the road facing the Union College Bulldogs in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm.
