On Monday, February 4th the University of the Cumberlands (UC) baseball team opened the 2013 season taking on rival Union College.  It was a pitching duel throughout with the Bulldogs coming out on top by a final score of 7-3.

Both teams entered the fifth inning in a scoreless tie when the Bulldogs were able to strike first on an RBI single from Jared Tomany.  However, UC answered back to tie the game at 1 apiece when Hibraim Cordova (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) scored on an RBI double by John Doolittle (Sharpsburg, GA).

In the sixth, Union regained the lead at 2-1 and Cumberlands once again answered to tie the game at 2 when Thomas Noll (Petersburg, KY) scored on a RBI single from Jared Martin (Cynthiana, KY).  The Patriots then took the lead in the seventh when Ryan Johnson (Goodlettsville, TN) scored on a RBI single from Charles Hyde (Fort Mitchell, KY) to put the score at 3-2.

Cumberlands went into the ninth hanging on to the 3-2 lead and took that lead down to the final out of the game when Tyler Brake of Union hit a go ahead grand slam off the Patriots Jordan Crus-Del Olmo (Miami, FL).   In the bottom half UC couldn't get over the hump and came away with the 7-3 loss.

The win went to Union's Drew Hillard and the loss went to the Patriots Jordan Crus-Del Olmo (0-1).

On the day the Patriots were led by Jared Martin who had 2 hits with an RBI and John Doolittle who had 2 doubles with an RBI.  On the mound Jonathan Paquet (Quebec, Canada) had an outstanding outing going 3 innings allowing no hits with 3 strikeouts.  Adam Quiles (Miami, FL) also had a solid outing going 3 innings allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts while Kahana Neal (Pearl City, HI) and Jonathan Bobea (Flushing, NY) threw a scoreless inning apiece.

Cumberlands is back in action this coming weekend when they travel to Alabama to take on #18 Auburn University Montgomery on Saturday, February 9th starting at 12:00 pm.  Then the Patriots will face #9 Faulkner University on Sunday, February 10th starting at 12:00 pm.
