The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Swim program has had a stellar 2012-2013 season thus far as they prepare themselves for the Mid-South Conference (MSC) Invite in just under two weeks. As they Patriot ladies held the #1 ranking in the NAIA for a chunk of the season, one Patriot in particular had a stellar month and for her efforts was recognized by the NAIA.
Melissa Peplinski (Spokane Valley, WA) has been named NAIA National Women's Swimmer & Diver of the Month for the 2012 - 2013 season, the national office announced Wednesday. Peplinski was selected based on her performances in the month of January and was chosen out of a pool of candidates nominated by NAIA women's swimming & diving programs.
Peplinski won three individual events and one team relay she competed in during January. Peplinski helped the Patriots win the 200-yard medley relay against Centre College (Ky.) on Jan. 18. Melissa racked up two more first place finishes against Centre College, as she won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.55 seconds and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.23 seconds. The very next day Peplinski won the 200 yard individual medley (2:21.23) against Berea (Ky.).
The next and final Swimmer & Diver of the Month award will be announced on Feb. 20.
The Patriots will be back in action on February 8th and 9th as they compete in the MSC Invite in Columbia, KY. They will go on from there to compete at the NAIA National Championships in Oklahoma City, OK on February 28th-March 2nd.
