The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men's Wrestling team traveled to Lebanon, TN on Tuesday to take on Mid-South Conference (MSC) foe Cumberland University in a dual.  After struggling early, the Patriot men fought back but just could not regroup quickly enough as they dropped a tough loss to the Bulldogs 23-16.

The Patriots began the dual with Grant Burkhalter (Citrus Heights, CA) in the 125 lb. weight class who dropped a close match to the Bulldogs Eddie Ortiz 4-2 to start the night.  Javier Carbajal (Homestead, FL) earned a dominating technical fall victory in the 133 lb. weight class to bring the dual score to 5-3 UC.  In the 141 pound category, Calob Perkins (Miamisburg, OH) dropped a tough match to the Bulldogs #5 ranked Jake Williams 6-1.  Both teams forfeited the 149 lb. weight class due to injuries, and after this the dual score was 6-5 advantage Bulldogs.

Cumberland University then took a big lead after gaining a technical fall and a pin in the 157 and 165 lb. weight classes bringing the score to 17-5.  After the Bulldogs gained another fall on Sean Bateman (Corona, CA) of UC in the 174 pound division, the Patriot men began one last surge to try and salvage this dual.

Starting it off at the 184 lb. weight class was Eddie Bernal (Covina, CA) as he gained a technical fall over the Bulldogs David Capers 18-2.  Fred Byers (College Park, GA) then followed that with a 9-6 decision over Aric Fernandez at the 197 lb. weight class, bringing the dual score to 23-13. The Patriots were unable to come away with a victory, but heavyweight Vince Pezzuto (Las Vegas, NV) finished the dual with an 8-2 decision victory over Tyler Smith at the end bringing the final tally to 23-16 in favor of Cumberland University.

The Patriot men fought hard and are hoping to bounce back on February 1st as the travel to Campbellsville, KY to take on MSC foe Campbellsville University.  Matches are scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm.
