Mon, Jan. 28, 2013 - [Women's Basketball]
The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Basketball program had nothing on their mind this week but getting back to their winning ways. After dropping two heartbreakers last week by two points per game against Campbellsville and Lindsey Wilson, the Patriots were looking for wins against both UVA-Wise and the University of Pikeville (UPike).
On Thursday, the Patriots hosted the Cavaliers of UVA-Wise. From the start, it was all Patriots in this one as they carried a 20 point lead into halftime and pulled away in the 2nd half earning a 77-50 win over the Cavs. Jessica Upchurch (Stanford, KY) and Vernisha Moss (Nassau, Bahamas) both chipped in 19 points each while combining for 14 rebounds. Jill Herman (Powell, TN) pitched in 17 points and 7 assists of her own. The Patriots held Wise to just 38% from the field while they shot over 48%.
On Saturday, it was the Bears of the University of Pikeville that were next on the agenda for UC. Pikeville had another thing on their mind though as they jumped out early to a 9-0 lead holding UC scoreless for the first 4 minutes of the game. The Patriots would finally get things going and would hold a 3 point lead 31-28 at halftime. UC would continue to pull away in the 2nd half as they earned a 73-64 win. Herman once again put up stellar numbers with 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Dace Bicane (Riga, Latvia) and Erica Lane (Knoxville, TN) both added 11 points each in the victory.
The Patriots will be back on the road next week as they take on St. Catharine College on Thursday and Georgetown College on Saturday.
