This past weekend, the University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Wrestling program competed in the National Duals in Springfield, Illinois. After three tough duals over a two day period, the Patriot ladies finished 1-2 earning a 7th place finish for the tournament.
On Saturday, the first dual for the Patriots was against Simon Frasier University. UC was outmatched in this dual as Simon Frasier was able to coast to a 36-3 win over the Patriots. Brittney Gadd (Mercer, PA) and Syndey Nelson (Kingsland, GA) competed tough throughout their matches, but were unable to come away with wins and Simon Frasier swept the dual.
Early Sunday morning, the Patriots were back on the mat as they took on Wayland Baptist in the consolation bracket. UC was much more competitive in this dual, but still came up just short as they fell to Wayland Baptist 29-19. Opelia Felipe (Rome, GA) started off the dual with a big pinfall victory at 1:56 in the 2nd period in the 101 lb. weight class. Cianah Hee (Hauula, HI) earned another pinfall victory at 0:26 in the 2nd period in the 130 lb. class. Brittney Gadd added another pinfall victory at 1:27 in the 1st period at 136 lbs. Finally, Sydney Nelson rounded out UC's win with a decision victory 3-1, 3-0 in the 170 lb. weight class.
The Patriots then found themselves in the 7th place match as they took on Waldorf College. The Patriot ladies came out on top as they only allowed one win by Waldorf during the entire dual, earning a 41-4 victory. Felipe started off the wins with a decision victory at 101 lbs. 6-0, 2-0. Sherri Berube (Corbell, MI) earned a pinfall victory in the 116 lb. category at 0:27 in the 2nd period. Gadd got her 2nd pinfall victory of the day in the 136 lb. class in the 1st period at 1:37. Kerstin Harmon (Bellefontaine, OH) also earned a decision victory in the 143 lb. class 3-0, 3-2. Nelson, Lauren Louive (Massillan, OH), and Olivia Cepak (South Lyon, MI) all earned pinfall victories in the 155, 170, and 191 lb. categories respectively to give UC the decisive victory. Alexandria Campbell (Austin, TX) and Liza Gutierrez (El Paso, TX) both earned forfeit victories in their weight classes.
Head Coach Alaina Berube commented, "We didn't wrestle our best this weekend. We had a tough dual against Simon Frasier on Saturday night, but I thought we wrestled well. Cianah Hee wrestled the world silver medalist and she just wrestled a great match. Sunday, we came out slow against Wayland Baptist and just didn't perform. We gave up way too many falls and got outwrestled. We came back against Waldorf and finished strong."
The Patriot ladies will be back on the mat in Bristol, TN on January 25th as they take part in the WCWA Nationals.
