The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Basketball team opened up the 2013 year with a slow start, losing two close battles on their home court to the Georgetown Tigers 63-57 on Thursday and the St. Catharine Patriots 60-57 on Saturday.   Although the Patriots put forth a valiant effort in both matches, they now move to 9-6 on the season and drop to 2-4 in Mid-South Conference (MSC) play.

On Thursday night, the Tigers of Georgetown visited the O. Wayne Rollins Center to battle the Patriots of UC.  While the Patriots struggled in the first half with turning the ball over, they found their team rhythm by the second half, coming back to take the lead.  However, the Tigers emotional play in the dwindling moments proved to be just too much for the Patriot ladies, as Georgetown came out on top 63-57.  Although the Patriots were defeated, there were a couple of bright spots in their fight.  Senior Dace Bicane (Riga, Latvia) scored a season high 24 points while tallying up 6 steals on the night in 30 minutes of play, while Jill Herman (Powell, TN) chipped in 11 points of her own along with 3 assists.  As a team, the Patriots also demonstrated some brilliant defense at times, forcing the Tigers All-Conference point guard into 13 turnovers on the night.

On Saturday, Cumberlands looked to regroup and regain focus against the Patriots of St. Catharine.  Leading by a strong 13 points early in the second half, the Patriots team play and transition basketball looked sharper than it had all year.  However, once again the Patriot ladies were unable to seal the deal, as St. Catharine's final run put them over the top in the end 60-57.  The Patriots were led by Herman who scored 19 points and handed out 6 assists on the evening and Brooke Forsythe (Brunswick, OH) who came off the bench to score 13 points in 22 minutes of play.

The Patriots will look to turn things around this week as they travel to Pikeville on Thursday evening to battle the Bears and UVA-Wise on Saturday afternoon.  Thursday's game is set to tip-off at 6:00 pm while Saturday will be a 2:00 pm tip-off.
