This past weekend the University of the Cumberlands (UC) Patriots Men's Wrestling team went into the Campbellsville University Duals looking to make a statement and did just that. The Patriots went 3-0 on the day and basically dominated every dual they had.
The Patriots started the day with a 38-6 win over Lindenwood-Belleville University. UC opened up the dual with a quick pin in the first period by Andrew Tillman (Abbeville, SC) in the 125 lb. weight class and began to roll from there. All but one weight class picked up a win for the Patriots except for the 174 lb. weight category. The Patriots controlled this dual and were looking forward to their next opponent.
Next, the Patriots won in dominating fashion as they defeated Darton College of the NJCAA 34-8. Darton came out swinging as they picked up two major decision wins at the 125 and 133 pound classes. After a huge 10-9 victory by Calob Perkins (Miamisburg, OH) at the 141 lb. division, the Patriot men would not be stopped racking up 8 straight victories to finish the dual including an epic finish of a pin by Vince Pezzuto (Las Vegas, NV) at the 285 lb. class to seal the victory.
The Patriots would finish the day continuing their dominance with a 44-11 win against #26 ranked Rend Lake College from the NJCAA. The Patriots started the dual with a forfeit at 125 lbs. and a major decision victory 13-3 by sophomore Stephen Hill (Carlisle, OH) at the 133 lb. class. Then after a tough loss in the 141 lb. class, UC got right back on a roll winning 6 of the last 7 matches including another big win by Vince Pezzuto at the 285 lb. class.
The Patriots men all had strong performances this weekend with Zack Barkett (Woodbridge, VA), Anthonie Linares (San Jose, CA), and Vince Pezzuto all going a perfect 3-0 and Fred Byars (College Park, GA) going 2-0 on the day.
Head Coach Matt Lowers commented, "I am proud of the way the team wrestled this weekend. We went in with a goal of going 3-0 and that's what we did. Moving into the National Duals, we are 7-1 and wrestling with a lot of confidence. We identified some things we need to work on this weekend, but overall the coaching staff was pleased with the dominant effort the team showed today."
The Patriot men are ready to get back on the mat as they prepare to travel to Springfield, IL for the National Duals on January 12-13.
