The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Basketball team wrapped up their first part of the 2012-2013 season on the beaches of Honolulu, Hawaii as they participated in the Hoop and Surf Classic. The Patriots enjoyed their time away from Kentucky, but also had business to take care of as they took on Doane College and NAIA D-II #1 Concordia (Neb.).
Last Wednesday, the Patriots took to the floor to take on the Tigers of Doane College. The Patriots were consistent from the floor shooting 41% on the game and held a 1 point lead at the half before pulling away for a 56-50 victory. Four Patriot ladies were in double figures on the night led by Ashley Mullins (Totz, KY) and Dace Bicane (Riga, Latvia). Mullins recorded another double-double as she went for 13 points and 10 rebounds while Bicane followed just behind with 13 points and 9 rebounds. Jessica Upchurch (Stanford, KY) also pitched in 11 points and 6 rebounds on the game. Jill Herman (Powell, TN) added 10 points as well.
On Thursday, it was a little tougher competition as the Patriots were up against NAIA D-II #1 ranked Concordia (Neb.) University. In a battle between two top teams in the country, the Patriots could not get over the hump as they trailed by 1 at the break and fell to the Bulldogs 59-53. UC was led on the night Jackie Alexander (Brodhead, KY) with 13 points and 2 rebounds. Ashley Mullins also pitched in 9 points and 7 rebounds on the game. Bicane and Upchurch were stellar on the glass as they pulled down 14 and 12 rebounds respectively.
The Patriot ladies will start off their 2nd semester of play in Mid-South Conference action as they are set to take on Georgetown College on Thursday January 3rd. Tipoff is set for 6:00 pm.
