The University of the Cumberlands (UC) football program had a season to remember.  It was a season with many thrills and records broken, but unfortunately ended with an exit in the NAIA FCS Quarterfinals.  The Patriots had many athletes earn individual honors at season's end and another award was just handed out.  The 2012 Daktronics-NAIA Football Scholar-Athletes have been announced with 260 student-athletes receiving the distinction.  For the University of the Cumberlands Patriots, Al Merrick (Pineville, KY) earned the distinction of being named a Daktronics NAIA Scholar Athlete.

In order to be a recipient of the NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete award, one must fulfill these requirements: the recipient must be a junior or senior in academic standing; have been in attendance at the nominating institution a minimum of one full year; have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 (on a 4.0 scale) at the time of nomination at the nominating institution; have been certified as eligible.  This is the first time Merrick has earned this particular award.  He was also named a member of the Academic All-Conference team.

The Patriots are gearing toward another successful season. They are also hoping to build off of a 2012 campaign that finished with a 10-2 record, a first round playoff win, and 2nd place in the MSC East.
