This past Saturday, the #12 University of the Cumberlands (UC) Patriot Men's wrestling team went into the Indiana Tech Duals looking to make a statement and did just that.  The Patriots went 3-1 on the day and saw some great wrestling out of this young, hard-nosed team.

The Patriots started the day with a 48-6 win over Calumet University. There were a lot of forfeits from Calumet in this dual but three Patriots earned victories in competition.  Andrew Tillman (Abbeville, SC) earned a 5-1 decision win in the 125 lb weight class.  Michael Thomas (Burlington, NC) also earned a 7-4 decision win in the 174 lb class.  A new name to the line-up for UC was Fred Byars (College Park, GA) as he earned a pinfall victory at 3:15 in the 285 lb weight class.

Next, the Patriots won a hard fought 22-19 dual against #13 Missouri Baptist University. UC was able to come up with 4 straight victories in the dual including captain Calob Perkins (Miamisburg, OH) with a fall in 6:43 at the 141 lb weight class, captain Anthonie Linares (San Jose, CA) with a 13-1 major decision win at the 149 lb weight class, Javier Arellano (Azusa, CA) with a 7-4 decision victory in the 157 lb category, and captain Zachary Barkett (Woodbridge, VA) with a 17-6 major decision win at the 165 lb weight class.  Fred Byars earned another impressive win this time in the 197 lb class earning a 17-1 tech fall victory.

The Patriots would then drop a hard fought battle against #15 Indiana Tech by a final score of 28-19.  Andrew Tillman earned a 5-2 decision win in the 125 lb class to give UC an early lead, but they would fall behind quickly.  Linares would help UC get back into the match as he won by major decision 18-4 in the 149 lb class.  Barkett would also earn a victory in the 165 lb class by pinfall in just 52 seconds.  Byars would wrap up the victories for UC earning a victory by injury default in the 197 lb class.

The Patriots finished the day with a dominating victory over Hannibal-La Grange University, who is receiving votes in the NAIA, with a score of 39-12.  UC tallied 6 straight victories to start the dual.  Tillman earned a pinfall win at 1:30 in the 125 lb class while Stephen Hill (Carlisle, OH) earned a 7-3 decision win in the 133 lb category.  Perkins and Linares both earned forfeit victories while Arellano earned another pinfall victory at 1:45 before Barkett earned yet another forfeit win.  Byars would earn the final victory of the evening with another pinfall victory at 4:44 in the 197 lb class.

Head Coach Matt Lowers commented, "I am pleased with the effort we showed this weekend.  We went out shorthanded and won 3 of 4 dual meets against some very quality competition.  We had 3 starters out of our line-up which can sometimes affect the other guys, but that didn't happen this weekend.  I felt like we were aggressive and really forced the action on our opponents.  Fred Byars had an outstanding day.  In his first competition in 3 years, Fred won all 4 matches while securing bonus points in all of them.  He led the team with 2 falls, 1 technical fall and an injury default.  Other undefeated wrestlers on the day were Anthonie Linares and Zack Barkett who also secured bonus points in all of their victories."

The Patriots will be back in action on January 5th as they travel to Campbellsville University for the Campbellsville Duals.
