This past weekend, select members of the University of the Cumberlands (UC) Patriots Men's Wrestling team traveled to Indianapolis, IN to compete in the Little States Invitational. The team performed well in the tournament as six wrestlers finished in the top 8 in their weight classes.
Sophomore Anthonie Linares (San Jose, CA) had another outstanding performance this week as he finished first in his weight class. This improved his record to 13-2 on the season. Linares cruised his way into the finals with one win by pin and two by technical falls before winning the tournament with a 5-3 decision victory.
Other Patriots who placed are as follows:
Head Coach Matt Lowers commented, "We only wrestled 11 wrestlers this weekend; 5 of which were starters. Those 5 starters all placed in the top 5 of the tournament, but it wasn't pretty. With the exception of Linares who had a great day, we really made a lot of silly mistakes and cost ourselves matches. We should have had more people in the finals and more people in the 3rd place matches. We need to eliminate these mistakes if we want to continue to improve and be a force in the NAIA. "
The Patriots hope to get more people onto the podium as they continue into the heart of their season over the next few months. The Patriots will be back in action on December 8th as they travel to Fort Wayne, IN to compete in the Indiana Tech University duals.
