The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men's Basketball team has perfected the term "winning" this season as they continue to roll through opponents with style and ease, defeating Cumberland University on Tuesday 69-62 and Union College on Saturday 102-72. With both wins coming in front of a home crowd, the Patriots now move to 9-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.
On Tuesday evening, the Patriots kicked off their Thanksgiving break on the right foot with a strong win against the Bulldogs of Cumberland University 69-62. While the Bulldogs led at halftime 37-36, the Patriots refused to give up their perfect season coming back in the second half on fire. With aggressive team defense and hard-nose rebounding, the Patriots proved to be too much for the Bulldogs to handle down the stretch, falling apart in the final minutes. Senior forward Benito Santiago Jr. (Coamo, Puerto Rico) was an intense spark for the Patriots in the second half, earning another double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Fellow senior Antonio Bumpus (Columbus, OH) followed closely scoring 21 points of his own along with 5 rebounds.
The Patriots returned to the O. Wayne Rollins Center on Saturday afternoon to battle the Bulldogs of Union College, dominating play in every aspect with a final score of 102-72. On the offensive side of things, the Patriots shot a steady 52% from the field as well as from the three-point line. They out-rebounded the Bulldogs effortlessly 43-20 while grabbing 7 steals as a team from their opponent. While defensively the stats were solid, it was the offensive side of the ball that impressed spectators. Six players for the Patriots reached double digit figures in the scoring column, with one posting a double-double as well. Ernie McCoy (Columbus, OH) led all scorers with 21 points, followed by Steve Goins (Chicago, IL) who scored 17 of his own. Santiago Jr. chipped in another strong performance with 16 points, while Bumpus posted yet another double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. James Archie (Jackson, MS) contributed 14 points as well, while Kenny Cowser (Snellsville, GA) put up 10 of his own.
With both wins, the now 9-0 Patriots look to continue Mid-South Conference play with a home-court match-up against Bluefield College on Dec 1. The game is set to tip-off at 4 pm.
