The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women's Basketball program was at home on Tuesday as they hosted one of the newcomers to the Mid-South Conference (MSC) for their conference home opener, the Cumberland University (CU) Bulldogs. The Patriots came into the game already at 1-1 in conference play as they fell to #2 Shawnee State University (SSU) last week, but the Bulldogs were riding high as they took down SSU on Saturday.
The Patriots seemed to come out of the gate lame as the Bulldogs were hot from the field early. CU opened up a 15-2 lead over the Patriots early in the 1st half and seemed to never look back as they held a 33-12 lead at the break. The Patriot ladies only shot 24% from the floor in the 1st half while the Bulldogs were at 46%. The Patriots were also 2-7 from the charity stripe in the 1st half.
The 2nd half was better for the Patriots, but still not good enough as the Bulldogs continued with the hot hand as they shot 50% from the field for the game as well as 43% from the three point arc. Cumberland University would build up a 29 point lead in the game and would finish with a 71-45 win over the Patriot ladies.
UC was led by freshman Ashley Mullins (Totz, KY) with 12 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Dace Bicane (Riga, Latvia) and Jill Herman (Powell, TN) would each add 8 points apiece as well. The Patriots would finish the game shooting 32% from the field, 15% from deep, and 58% from the free throw line. UC did have 21 turnovers in a game where they never held the lead.
The Patriot ladies will be back in action on Tuesday November 27th as they will host #21 Columbia College for a game, the 2nd time they will meet this season. Tipoff is set for 6:00 pm.
