Mid-South Conference officials announced today that the MSC Women's Cross Country Championship results have been overturned following an administrative error that occurred during the race on Saturday, Nov. 3.
University of the Cumberlands' Darcy Mascotti and Danielle Hoop -- who originally deemed to have finished second and third respectively because of an on-course error -- were awarded first and second by conference officials.
Lindsey Wilson College's Sharon Ronoh moves from first to third with the change.
"This is the right thing to do," Mid-South Conference Commissioner Steve Baker said. "I want to applaud all those individuals involved for their efforts to make things right after an honest mistake on the course. Our member institutions firmly believe in the five core values of the NAIA's Champions of Character program and this was a true Champions of Character moment.
"But ultimately, we must adhere to the rules and policies of the race and therefore must make the adjustment."
During the race, Ronoh -- who led by a wide margin -- made a wrong turn during the latter moments of the race taking her off the predetermined course.
Following the race, it was discovered that an administrative error -- a gate was not opened by the officials after the first run through the course -- forced Ronoh to make the wrong turn. Ronoh eventually returned to the course and finished behind Mascotti and Hoop for third place.
Despite the order of finish and due to the error, race officials awarded Ronoh first place based on her substantial lead at the time of the oversight.
Mascotti and Hoop, along with the coaches, embraced the race officials' decision.
"I compliment the willingness to correct the mistake, especially from Darcy and Danielle," Baker said. "I would hope we could all follow their great example of how sports ought to be kept in the proper perspective.
"I would like to congratulate all three women for their contribution to the Mid-South Conference and their institutions and wish them all the best at the national championships."
Mascotti, Hoop and Ronoh each earned a trip to this Saturday's NAIA Women's Cross Country National Championships in Vancouver, Wash. based on their finish in the conference race.
