On Monday, November 12th the Mid-South Conference (MSC) released the 2013 softball preseason rankings. Playing in one of the country's toughest conferences, the University of the Cumberlands (UC) Patriots were picked to finish in a tie for ninth.
After winning or sharing the MSC title the last three seasons, Lindsey Wilson College was picked to finish first with 99 votes and 9 first place votes.
Followed behind them in second was Campbellsville University who received 87 votes and the final 2 first place votes. In third was Georgetown College with 82, Shawnee State with 72, and Cumberland University with 61 to round out the top five.
Rio Grande received 55 votes for sixth followed by St. Catharine with 45, UVA-Wise 44, and University of the Cumberlands in a tie with Pikeville with 25 votes. Bluefield rounds out the conference with 10 votes.
Returning for the Patriots are catcher Brittny Lovelace (Middletown, OH), shortstop Tabitha Benson (Cookeville, TN), right fielder Rachel Akins (London, KY), and designated hitter Kaitlyn Shephard (Berry, KY). Returning on the mound for Cumberlands is Jessica Speake (Lancaster, KY) and Ashleigh Hopf (Dayton, OH).
The Patriots open the 2013 season on Saturday, February 16th in Athens, TN against Tennessee Wesleyan starting at 1:00 pm.
