The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men's Soccer team had a back and forth week as they were able to record their 6th win of the season, but then came home to drop a tough game to the #2 ranked team in the country. The Patriots traveled to West Virginia to take on Concord College on October 3rd and earned a 3-1 win. UC then hosted #2 ranked Lindsey Wilson College where the Blue Raiders defeated the Patriots 4-1.
Scoring started early for UC in the 2nd minute of the game as Gonzalo Ortega (Las Condes, Chile) found the back of the net to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead against Concord. With a stellar offensive strategy, the Patriots were able to place two more goals into the net by Pedro Antonelli (Mairipord, Brazil) in the 32nd minute and 42nd minute with an assist by Raphael Lima de Lucas (Sao Paulo, Brazil) on the latter of the two. Concord would make a push in the 51st minute with a goal by Ryan Forde, but that was all they could gather as UC took a 3-1 victory. Goalie Dwayne Tucker (Knoxville, TN) had a great game as he came up with 4 big saves for the Patriots.
On Saturday, the Patriots would have one of their toughest matches of the season as they hosted NAIA #2 ranked Lindsey Wilson College. The Blue Raiders would take the lead in the 10th minute of the game on a goal by Philip Sandgren, but would be answered in the 19th minute by Gonzalo Ortega to even the game at 1-1. They would take this score into halftime, but after the break it was Lindsey Wilson who came out with the momentum. Another goal by Sandgren in the 57th minute would give the Blue Raiders all they would need to defeat UC. Two more goals in the 62nd and 71st minute by Lwandiso Gonya would give LWC a 4-1 victory over the Patriots. Tucker saved a total of 4 goals during the match.
The Patriots (6-2-1, 3-2 MSC) will be back on the field again on October 10th as they travel to take on MSC member St. Catharine College beginning at 4:00 p.m.
