The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Patriots volleyball team had a tough week of play this past week as they traveled to Campbellsville on Tuesday before making the 6 hours trip to Bethel, TN for a tri-match on Friday against Asbury University and Bethel University.
The Patriot ladies came into the match on Tuesday against the Tigers of Campbellsville with a will and desire to win. Unfortunately, Campbellsville had other thoughts on their mind as they defeated UC in 4 games by scores of 12-25, 14-25, 25-23, 18-25. Junior Megan Schulte (Beavercreek, OH) led the Patriots with a total of 7 kills in the match. Senior Kelsey Dew (Clinton, TN) led the team defensively with a total of 11 digs while freshman Samantha Stuckwisch (Seymour, IN) added 14 assists.
The Patriots left a day early as they took to the road for a big tri-match on Friday against Asbury University and Bethel University. The first match of the day was against the Eagles of Asbury. UC was able to take the first game, but could not get into a groove in the match as Asbury was able to come away with a 3-1 win over the Patriots by scores of 25-22, 19-25, 12-25, 22-25. Sophomore Stacey Sebald (Beavercreek, OH) led UC with 13 kills in this match. Senior Kelsey Dew (Clinton, TN) was key defensively with a total of 18 digs. Following closely behind her was Chelsea Hendrix (Seymour, IN) who added 16 digs of her own. Junior Abby Dundon (Lexington, KY) was a big part in the Patriot offense with 16 assists while Stuckwisch followed just behind with 15 assists.
UC would then take the floor against the Bethel University Wildcats. The Patriot ladies came out with determination and came away with a 3-1 victory over the Wildcats by scores of 22-25, 25-17, 29-27, 25-23. Once again, senior Stacey Sebald led UC in kills during the match with 15. Junior Abby Dundon (Lexington, KY) pitched in her part with 22 assists while Stuckwisch added 21 assists of her own. Dew was clutch defensively in this match as she accumulated a phenomenal 21 digs.
The Patriots will be back in action on September 18th at 7 pm as they host Mid-South Conference rival Georgetown College.
