The University of the Cumberlands (UC) football program has made a statement in its first 2 games of the 2012 season starting the year with a 2-0 record. Thus far, the Patriots have outscored their opponents 76-23, including a 55-13 win over then #23 Cumberland University. This powerful offense and stellar defense has the eyes of voters turning toward the Mid-South Conference (MSC) and the Patriots have made a big jump this week in the NAIA Top 25 poll.
The Patriots started out the 2012 preseason ranked 19th in the country. This week's edition of the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll has the Patriots moving up 5 spots to #14 in the country. Head Coach John Bland knows what it is like to be ranked high and to be one of the teams with a bulls-eye on its back. That is why he and his staff continue to work with relentless spirit in hopes of getting the most on what could be a special season.
The Patriots will keep on working hard to move up but it doesn't look to get any easier. With Mid-South Conference play set to start this week, every game will most certainly be a battle and test starting with Union College on Saturday in the Battle for the Brass Lantern.
Coach Bland is excited about the jump but still knows what is most important. "It is always nice to jump up in the national polls. We also know the final poll is the only one that matters, but these polls are like a pat on the back for what these boys are doing," says Bland. Look for UC to continue to climb up the polls as they turn their attention to the Bulldogs of Union College this Saturday in Barbourville, KY.
If you cannot make it to the game, you can listen to all the action on Saturday as Brandon Hensley and Ronnie Bowling will have the call. Locally, listen in on 104.3 FM EZ Country or online at www.cumberlandspatriots.com. Kickoff is set for 12:00 pm.
